  13. OK, my script was finally rejected.  I'll be posting it to the net
  14. over the next few days.  Sorry about the poor formatting, but it was a
  15. Macintosh file and I didn't want to spend a lot of time coverting it.

  17. Now that I re-read it, it doesn't look as brilliant as it did when I
  18. wrote it.  ;-)   And I lied, it's not about Wesley's older and smarter
  19. brother ....  or Picard's first exposure to Red Kryptonite ....

  36.                     PICARD (V.O.)
  37. Captain's Log, Stardate 44517.2 We are in route to Talford 4 on what
  38. Admiral Noonan has called a suicide mission.  As per his instructions
  39. all non-essential personal have been left at Starbase Lopez.  Starfleet
  40. seems to be taking this matter very seriously.
  41.  
  42.     INT. ENTERPRISE - CONFERENCE ROOM                
  43.  
  44. TROI is staring out as BEVERLY enters. Troi is very subdued and controlled.
  45.  
  46.                 BEVERLY
  47. Are you ok?
  48.  
  49.                 TROI
  50. It's just that everyone is so tense.  It's pouring over me.
  51.  
  52.                 BEVERLY
  53. This is different?
  54.  
  55.                 TROI
  56. Yes.  Everyone is awake and waiting to see what happens when we go into
  57. orbit.

  59.     INT. ENTERPRISE - BRIDGE

  61. PICARD and RIKER seated, GEORDI at Engineering, WORF at Tactical, DATA
  62. at Ops, Supernumerary at Conn.  Everyone except Data is slightly keyed

  66. Sir, Talford 4 has been off-limits for over 200 years.  Why the sudden
  67. interest?

  70.                 (Looks at Picard, who nods)
  71. The Ferengi have been spotted in this sector.  Starfleet would prefer
  72. that we solve this mystery before the Ferengi do.

  74.                 PICARD
  75. And we will see if the advances of the past 200 years have given us
  76. what we need to survive here.  Maybe with better shields or training
  77. we'll be better prepared for whatever it is that awaits us.

  79. Troi enters from Conference Room, walks behind Worf and around to her seat.

  193. are motionless, staring into space.  The only reactions are from the
  194. aliens: Worf, Troi, and Data.

  217. OK, I posted the Teaser for this last week.  Here's Act I.

  225.         INT.- ENTERPRISE (OPTICAL)    
  226.         HALLWAYS, ENGINEERING, SICKBAY, TEN FORWARD.
  227.  
  228. Shots of motionless humans with a few aliens looking at them.
  229.  
  230.                         DATA (V.O.)
  231. Special Mission Log,  Second Officer Data, Stardate 44517.21  The ship
  232. is presently in the grip of a forcefield from the surface of Talford
  233. 4.  As a result, our engines are being drained and we are being pulled
  234. into the planet's atmosphere.  Also, the humans on board are paralyzed
  235. by the field in some way that has not yet been determined.
  236.  
  237.         INT. ENTERPRISE - BRIDGE    
  238.  
  239. Data at Science Station, Worf at Tactical, Picard, Riker, Geordi and
  240. Conn are still motionless.  Troi is on knees in front of Picard and
  241. Riker examining them.  While in the forcefield: the humans are not
  242. zombies.  They look relaxed unless otherwise specified.  When walking
  243. they have a normal gait.  Troi is more animated, does not fold her
  244. arms, stands with hands on hips, talks with less of an accent.  No
  245. perceivable changes in Data or Worf.
  246.  
  247.                         DATA
  248.                     (Continuing)
  249. Copies of all logs and records are being placed in a special Class
  250. Eight probe targeted for Starbase Lopez.
  251.  
  252. Data presses keys.
  253.  
  254.                     COMPUTER
  255. Transfer is complete.
  256.  
  257.                     DATA
  258. Launch probe.
  259.  
  260.                     WORF
  261. Probe is launched, sir.
  262.  
  263.         EXT. SPACE - ENTERPRISE (OPTICAL)

  265. Still surrounded by forcefield.  Probe is fired from torpedo tube.  It
  266. leaves forcefield and continues on out into space.

  268.         INT. ENTERPRISE - BRIDGE

  270.                     DATA
  271. Computer, display all personal with one or more alien parents.
  272.  
  273. Screen shows 19 names.

  277. Again, with present location.
  278. Computer, summon Lt. G.R. to the bridge.  Assign those with advanced
  279. medical training to Sickbay.  The rest should go to Engineering.

  282. Sir,  doesn't G.R. function best in a zero-gravity  environment?
  283.  
  284.                     DATA
  285. Yes, but I doubt we will need his special abilities during the next few
  286. hours.  And in the full-gravity sections of the ship  he would have no
  287. strength,  but working the helm should not be too great a strain on
  288. him.
  289.  
  290. Bridge to Ten Forward.

  296. Ten Forward is almost empty because of the Alert.  There are two
  297. motionless humans.  GUNIAN is at COM panel.

  303. Could you do a visual check of crew quarters? There may have been some
  304. falls or other injuries.  Lt. Worf will provide Security override.

  315. Troi is still standing in front of Picard and Riker.  They are now standing.

  323. I've found something!  They can hear and act on simple commands.  I
  324. told them to stand and they did!

  332.  
  333. Beverly is on diagnostic bed.  Human standing nearby. SELAR is studying
  334. tricorder readings.

  339.                     DATA'S COM VOICE
  340. Have you been able to learn anything?
  341.  
  342.                     SELAR
  343. Whatever we are in seems to affect the rate at which the synopses fire
  344. in the human brain.  Automatic and even semi-automatic patterns remain
  345. stable.

  347.  
  348. Selar pushes man.  He reflexively holds out hands to keep balance.
  349.  
  350.                     DATA
  351. Did you know they can follow simple commands?
  352.  
  353.                     SELAR
  354. That would be logical.  A direct order would trigger ingrained behavior
  355. patterns.  But it would take repeated stimuli to keep them going.
  356.  
  357.                     DATA'S COM VOICE
  358. Can you counteract the effect of the field?
  359.  
  360.                     SELAR
  361. It is possible.  But if I cause an increase in the synapse rate of fire
  362. then leaving the field would cause brain damage or death for most of
  363. the humans.

  365.                     DATA'S COM VOICE
  366. I see.  Keep working on it and keep me informed of any new information.
  367.  
  368.                     GUINAN'S COM VOICE
  369. Medical assistance needed in crew quarters.  Compound fracture as the
  370. result of a fall.  Looks like internal bleeding.
  371.  
  372.                     SELAR
  373.                 (Picks up medical kit)
  374. On my way.

  377.         INT. ENTERPRISE - BRIDGE    
  378. Troi is leading Riker to Conference Room. Picard is still standing.
  379. G.R. is at CONN.  Worf and Data are near Tactical.  G.R. has no
  380. strength in a full gravity environment, so he does not move very much.
  381. (Note: G. R. is a squid-like being and G. R. stands for 'Green Rug')
  382. ;-)

  384.                     DATA
  385. Is there a way to knock out the forcefield?
  386.  
  387.                     WORF
  388. No, sir.  The field is coming from a planet-wide system of generating
  389. plants.  If it had just one source then our orbit would have carried us
  390. out of its range by now.  We have enough energy to knock out one or two
  391. plants, but that will not free us.
  392.  
  393.         ANGLE ON MAIN VIEWER (OPTICAL)    
  394.  
  395.         Shows grid of plants on the planet feeding the field.
  396.  
  397.         INT. ENTERPRISE - BRIDGE

  399.                     DATA
  400. Are the shields having any effect?
  401.  
  402.                     WORF
  403. None.
  404.  
  405.                     DATA
  406. Lower the shields and I will divert power back to the engines.

  409. Done, sir.

  411. Troi ENTERS and gets Picard.

  415. I will also shutdown power to all unoccupied sections of the ship.  Did
  416. the probe clear the forcefield?
  417.  
  418.                     WORF
  419. Yes, it did.  The field must only focus on vessels containing humans.
  420. This would suggest that if we can not get free, then those of us
  421. unaffected could use the shuttles to escape.
  422.  
  423.                     DATA
  424. Or beam all the humans to the planet's surface and see if that frees
  425. the Enterprise.
  426.  
  427.                     WORF
  428. (shocked)
  429. But they would die on the planet's surface!
  430.  
  431.                     DATA
  432. They may die no matter what we do.
  433.  
  434.         INT. ENTERPRISE - ENGINEERING    
  435.  
  436. A few aliens are working over various panels   TISK steps to COM panel.
  437.  
  438.                     DATA'S COM VOICE
  439. Engineering, report.
  440.  
  441.                     TISK
  442. Ensign Tisk here, sir.  We are still not sure how the forcefield
  443. works.  The efficiency of the engines is dropping steadily.  It is now
  444. at 64%.
  445.  
  446.                     DATA'S COM VOICE
  447. Very well.  Keep working on it  Let me know of any sudden changes.
  448.  
  449.  
  450.         INT. ENTERPRISE - CONFERENCE ROOM
  451. Riker is seated.  Troi leads Picard in and gets him to sit down.  After
  452. he sits, she kisses him on the top of the head.
  453.  
  454.                     TROI
  455. There you go.
  456.  
  457. Troi gives Riker a hug.  Pauses.  Stands with hands on hips  Touches
  458. communicator.
  459.  
  460.                     TROI
  461. Dr. Selar.
  462.  
  463.                     SELAR'S COM VOICE
  464. Yes.

  466.                     TROI
  467. If we leave the forcefield, will they have any memory of what is
  468. happening now?
  469.  
  470.                     SELAR'S COM VOICE
  471. Yes.  They will remember everything they can sense right now.

  474. Thanks, Troi out.
  475. (Grits teeth, looks at Picard)
  476. Ooops.
  477. (Rubs tops of his head where she kissed it.)

  480. Troi giggles and EXITS to Bridge.

  484. Troi ENTERS. Geordi is still near Engineering panel.

  487. Counselor, could you assist Dr. Selar until the reported injuries have
  488. been taken care of?

  491. Certainly.

  493.         Troi EXITS to Turbolift.

  496. I believe it going to take the human's help to restore the ship.  But
  497. If I have Dr. Selar return them to normal then it will be fatal for
  498. some of them when we leave.  Or I can kill them beforehand and see if
  499. the field will release us.  But I do not relish 900 years of solitary
  500. confinement.

  502.                     WORF
  503. Could the computer give them directions?  
  504.  
  505.                     DATA
  506. The computer can give them directions but it relies on a certain level
  507. of intelligent response.  It does not know how to break down those
  508. commands into simpler components.
  509.  
  510.                     WORF
  511. That sounds like something you could do.  You are as fast as the
  512. computer and understand humans.
  513.  
  514.                     DATA
  515. But I can not speak fast enough to lead very many humans.  I would have
  516. to give an order, have the computer relay it, get some reply, modify
  517. the order if needed,  and use that process with several people at
  518. once.  I doubt I could get five humans to work well on any task.  The
  519. ideal would be to have a human intelligence that thought as fast as the
  520. computer and could communicate with the computer equally fast.
  521.  
  522. Computer, give me a list of the most advanced human personalities in
  523. the databanks.
  524.  
  525. List of names appears on the screen.  Data looks at list, then heads
  526. for Turbolift.

  529. Geordi, follow me.
  530. Mr. Worf, you have the bridge.

  539. Worf checks panel,  walks around and stands in front of Captain's
  540. chair.  Sits.

  565. injured; one critically and two with minor cuts.  All have been moved
  566. to sickbay.

  587. It gets boring in my portion of the ship at times.  Are you experienced
  588. at zero gravity combat?

  591. No, I am not, but I would be interested to learn.

  595. Data followed by Geordi.  Troi skips up and pats Geordi on the rear.
  596. Geordi reacts but is not startled.

  599. Where are you going?

  602. Holodeck two.  I hope to create a computer personality that can direct
  603. the humans.

  606. Which personality?

  609. The Professor Moriarty program from when I tried to be Sherlock
  610. Holmes.  It is the most advanced personality in the databank.
  611.

  613. Does this worry you?

  616. A little.  But for all his faults, Moriarty was a reasonable person
  617. when he learned that he could not leave the holodeck.

  619. (pauses)
  620. And how are you doing?

  623. It's been kind of -- exciting  It's so different to have such a quiet
  624. ship -- mentally, that is.

  626. OK, well, I'm off to sickbay.

  639. Unable to comply.  The energy needed to create the Moriarty environment
  640. is not available at this time.

  644. only the Moriarty character -- no other props or character simulations
  645. are needed at this time.

  655. Moriarty reacts as if he'd just received a pleasurable electric shock.

  1186. return our shields to normal?

  1488. transmitted with this log.  One added note: it has been discovered that
  1489. the field is doing continuous scans of the ship.

  1593. humans regain consciousness.  She sucks in her breath, grits teeth,

  1600. (puzzled.)
  1601. But that should only happen when we leave the forcefield.

  1604. Sir, the forcefield has dropped.  Our shields have dropped.  We are
  1605. firing our phasers -- but not at any identified target.

  1612. Sir, there are explosions on the planet's surface at the forcefield
  1613. generation sites.

  1620. Planet's surface shows a network of sites that are exploding.  There
  1621. are some gaps in the pattern.

  1627. The Enterprise was being held by a forcefield, sir.  The field was
  1628. generated by a number of sites on the planet's surface.  The field just
  1629. dropped and the generating plants have started destroying themselves
  1630.  ... for reasons unknown.

  1632.           MORIARTY'S COM VOICE
  1633. Holmes.  Moriarty here.
  1634.  
  1635. Picard and Riker look at each other in puzzlement.
  1636. Picard mouths the word, "Moriarty?"

  1644. When I started to raise the shields the forcefield dropped suddenly.
  1645. Engine output doubled and there was too much power available.  I shut
  1646. down the shields, overrode the security panel, and fired the phasers to
  1647. bleed off the excess power.  The system has now stabilized.  I have
  1648. shut the phasers down and returned control of shields and engine.  I
  1649. will standby and will continue to monitor the engines.
  1650.  
  1651.           PICARD
  1652. Thank you ... Professor.  The generating sites are destroying
  1653. themselves, so I expect no further threat.

  1655.           WORF
  1656. Sir, the planet has started broadcasting a beacon.

  1662. It is targeted for the center of the galaxy.  The beacon appears to
  1663. repeat a short message but it is not in a language we recognize.

  1669. There is a reason the Professor Moriarty program is running my ship?

  1675. where we can examine the equipment and maybe get an answer to the

  1680. their equipment.  Mr. Data, I would like you to stay here and brief me

  1768. 4.  We seem to have survived its little test, but are still unsure of
  1769. the purpose of the planet's defenses or the meaning of its beacon.

  1771. INT. STONE BUILDING (OPTICAL)

  1773. A large piece of machinery is in the center of the room.  There is a
  1774. hole in the roof and some debris has collected in the corners.  There
  1775. are markings on the machinery.  Riker, Selar, Worf, and Tisk
  1776. materialize.  Riker remains motionless while the rest start looking at
  1777. him.
  1778.  
  1779.           RIKER
  1780. Boo.
  1781. (as others jump/react)
  1782. Just joking.  Now, what do we have here?
  1783.  
  1784. All four start examining the room and machinery.  Worf examines the
  1785. floor with his tricorder.

  1787.           WORF
  1788. Sir, the area below is filled with explosives. This site was supposed
  1789. to blow up with the rest of them.
  1790.  
  1791.           TISK
  1792. Commander, the roof must have been destroyed by some type of storm.  It
  1793. seems to have broken the power and communications connections.
  1794.  
  1795.           RIKER
  1796. Is this equipment a threat to us?
  1797.  
  1798.           WORF
  1799. No, sir.  Without power it is totally inert.  We could beam it back to
  1800. the ship for further study.
  1801.  
  1802.           SELAR
  1803. There are markings on the equipment, sir.  The translator should be
  1804. able to use them to decipher the language.

  1806.           WORF
  1807. Sir, if I might make a suggestion.  Since the explosives might be
  1808. unstable, it might be prudent if we beam back before transporting the
  1809. equipment.

  1811.           RIKER
  1812. Good idea.
  1813. (touches communicator)
  1814. Enterprise, four to beam back.  Keep a lock on these coordinates to
  1815. transfer this equipment back directly to shuttlebay 2.  Riker out.

  1817. Away Team dematerializes.  A few seconds later the machinery dematerializes.

  1821. Moriarty is still working on body outlines.  Picard ENTERS.

  1845. Yes, I thought it would help my reputation. Oh, and that is a

  1869. remaining sites and in each case it was the same --  some natural
  1870. disaster had disrupted either the power or communications connections.

  1872. keep the Ferengi from discovering them.

  1874.           PICARD
  1875. Make it so, Number 1.  And the beacon?
  1876.  
  1877.           RIKER
  1878. The beacon operated for roughly one day of local time before that site
  1879. exploded.  It was the last functioning equipment on the planet.  It
  1880. never changed its message.

  1882.           PICARD
  1883. Were you able to decipher the message?
  1884.  
  1885.           DATA
  1886. If our present translation is correct then the message was simply,
  1887. "Humans, yes."
  1888.  
  1889.           PICARD
  1890. So, was this some kind of test?

  1893. It would seem so,  sir.  I am still not clear on their criteria for
  1894. determining 'Yes.'

  1897. Well, if we did in fact pass some kind of test, it was only because of
  1898. the friends and acquaintances we've made along the way.  It wasn't our
  1899. advances in shield or weapon technology.  Hmm.

  1903. That may have been the point of the test, sir.  The field dropped as
  1904. soon as we showed we could make technical changes without human help.

  1907. I see.  I must admit it's somewhat humbling to realize that I sat there

  1911. I wonder what our next test will be?

  1934. it is a literal headache, but I do not feel that I could grow as much
  1935. if I were more isolated.  That's the best answer I can give you for

  1987. But my brain is organized in a manner similar to that of the main computer.

  2025. Certain tribes on Earth would take a narrow necked bottle and put a nut
  2026. in it.  The monkey would reach in and grab the nut.  But he could not
  2027. pull the clenched fist out of the bottle.  Since he could not bring
  2028. himself to let go of the nut, he was trapped.

  2031. So as long as I refuse to give up all this memory and power, I am stuck
  2032. in this little room?

  2035. Exactly.
